Nepal's Electoral Scene Witnesses Significant Alliance Forged By TV Host and Former Musician Mayor
In a notable move ahead of the upcoming national polls, a pair of high-profile personalities in Nepali politics have joined forces. This alliance emerges in the wake of widespread and fatal young people's demonstrations that rocked the country earlier this year and ultimately resulted in the removal of the incumbent government.
A Pledge to Address Youth Demands
Media figure Rabi Lamichhane, who heads the Rastriya Swatantra Party (RSP), and Kathmandu Mayor Balendra Shah, a one-time rapper, have officially pledged to prioritize the grievances raised by the new generation. This promise follows the violent anti-corruption protests that took place in September, which resulted in significant loss of life.
"Consensus must not be what a leader wants, it must be what the nation requires," remarked Lamichhane after the deal was signed.
The September revolt was sparked by widespread frustration over a temporary government ban on social media platforms. This action acted as a spark for deeper discontent stemming from a long period of economic stagnation and persistent accusations of systemic graft in politics.
Terms of the New Political Agreement
According to the official agreement, the roles for the imminent election have been clarified. Rabi Lamichhane will continue to serve as the chairperson of the RSP. In turn, Balendra Shah will be the alliance's nominee for the role of prime minister in the election set for 5 March.
- Rabi Lamichhane: A well-known fifty-one-year-old television personality, he founded the RSP in 2022, capturing broad public dissatisfaction with the nation's established political class. He has in the past served in the positions of deputy prime minister and interior minister. He was recently released on bail in a case involving alleged cooperative fraud and organized crime.
- Balendra Shah (Balen): The thirty-five-year-old mayor of Kathmandu is seen as a central figure in Nepal's ongoing political transition. He was instrumental in setting up the interim government that took over after the previous administration was dissolved.
Wider Government Discussions Underway
In a separate development, the sitting interim prime minister over the weekend conducted consultations with a number of leading political leaders. These discussions included former prime ministers and the presidents of other major parties, marking the initial such dialogue since the period of the uprising.
Following these meetings, the prime minister took to social media to emphasize that holding a free and fair election is a collective responsibility. The message affirmed the government's dedication to ensuring a secure and fear-free environment for the electoral process, noting that efforts are being made to remove any room for doubt.
