The Generosity of Unknown Individuals: How a Person I Barely Knew Supported Me Land the Role That Altered My Path

In the closing decade of the 80s, I was embarking on a low-cost journey to Europe with a companion. Because my travel mate was interested in enrolling in graduate studies in New York, we had arranged a fortnight visit there en route to London.

We reached the postgrad residence, a big ten-floor structure on the Manhattan's Upper West Side called International House. Setting down our luggage, we went directly to the dining hall, where we picked up meals, took a seat, and engaged in conversation with other diners.

Adjacent to my seat was an individual of Iraqi origin studying engineering at an Ivy League institution. He inquired what I my profession was, and I told him that I had just graduated with a degree in science and had been conducting research using an electron microscope.

He noted that there was an electron microscope unit at the institution – right next door to the school of engineering, which was the reason he was familiar with it. He proposed that I should apply for a role with them. I dismissed the idea, explaining that I was soon departing to Europe and, additionally, I lacked a US visa.

The following day I went out exploring, going back to the cafeteria that after dark. The man from Iraq came up to me and told me that he had arranged an interview for me with the leader of the research team at Columbia. Given that he had gone to the trouble, I showed up for the discussion – but straight off informed my host that I was without a work permit, so I was unable to accept the role.

Reflecting the city's spirit – a place where opportunities abound – she declared: “We'll handle it. How soon can you begin?” I never got on that flight to London.

I held that position for a trio of years. A perk of the job was that I was granted free tuition at Columbia, and I took advantage to complete a graduate degree in global studies.

We didn't cross paths after that and I can't recall his name, but his incredible act of kindness transformed my future in so many ways. I would never have had the bravery or self-assurance to contact anyone at an Ivy League university and request employment. Moreover, I had always wanted to study abroad, but lacked the financial means without that educational benefit.

Critically, that role at the university paved the way for a position in Switzerland where I encountered my handsome spouse from France, with whom I am raising four wonderful sons and daughters. It was a total sliding doors moment. That helpful person changed my trajectory in life, and I’m always appreciative.
